History

In the past 25 years, Total Transportation of Mississippi has grown from a mere shack of a terminal and 3 very well used trucks, to a major national carrier in the mid-sized transportation industry. It’s not always been easy, but under the motivated command of co-founder John Stomps and his drive to find innovative and passionate employees, Total has weathered the hills and curves of the economic road to emerge more streamlined and profitable than ever before.

Today, Total has 3 corporate terminals and multiple secure drop yards, more than 750 trucks, and directly employs over 1200 people.

Total’s leadership team exceeds 155 years of combined transportation experience and is positioning itself for the future.

Following a bright career with Consolidated Freightways throughout the 1980’s, John Stomps co-founded Total Transportation with partner Rick Kale. Like many business owners with humble beginnings, John and Rick worked day and night in any capacity necessary to ensure the company’s success.  By 1999, their dedication to service had helped to drive their expanding fleet to service a growing customer base. To this end, Total added terminals in Tupelo, Memphis, Knoxville and Kearny, NJ.

Throughout the 2000’s, Total’s growth and success began to be noticed by several large National Truckload Carriers.  In less than 15 years, Total had moved from a small 20 truck operation into a mid-size national carrier of 500 trucks. After weighing numerous offers, in 2007 U.S. Xpress Enterprises purchased a majority interest in Total Transportation and named John Stomps President and CEO.

Since 2007, Total has overcome the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and the most challenging regulatory environment in transportation history.  Even with these challenges, Total has maintained a standard of excellence while striving to find solutions to our customers evolving needs. Today Total holds its history as a core foundation of its standard of excellence. A hand-picked management team prides itself on finding forward thinking dynamic solutions to challenges across various industries while remembering we are nothing without our employees. Total continues to align with the country’s top corporations and build a sustainable network that proudly serves America’s industries.
